Electric bill calculator

Pick your state to start from its average, then replace the numbers with the ones on your bill.

Estimated bill: $254 a month, $3,047 a year if every month matched this one

Alabama average for August 2026 (EIA): $254 a month. Replace the numbers with those on your bill.

How the estimate works

Your bill is roughly the price per unit multiplied by how much you use. For electricity the unit is the kilowatt-hour (kWh), and prices are quoted in cents per kWh. Both figures are printed on your bill.

The state defaults are averages for all residential customers, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. For electricity, EIA's average price is total residential revenue divided by kWh sold, so it already spreads fixed customer charges and surcharges across every kWh. Your own bill can differ with your utility's rate plan, its fixed charge and any taxes added to the bill. See the methodology.

The "a year" figure assumes every month matches the one you entered. Use changes with the seasons, so the state pages also show what the last 12 months of average bills actually added up to.
