Why are some states' electric bills so much higher?

A bill is price times use, and the two vary independently. In August 2026 the price ranged from 12.72¢/kWh in Nevada to 47.18¢/kWh in Hawaii, while typical use ranged from 473 kWh in Alaska to 1,789 kWh in Arizona. So a state with a high price can still have a moderate bill if homes use little electricity, and the reverse.

Use also follows the seasons: air conditioning pushes bills up in summer in hot states, and electric heating does the same in winter. That is why a single month can rank states differently from a full year, and why the table also shows the 12-month average.

How have bills changed since August 2025?

The U.S. average bill was $188 in August 2025 and $209 in August 2026, 11.2% higher. The largest increase was in Virginia, from $169 to $220. The largest decrease was in Connecticut, from $239 to $204. The August 2026 report lists the biggest movers.
